Watching Haleakala Sunrise

If you want to see sunrise in Maui, you should visit Haleakala. The Haleakala Mountain used to be home to the kahuna high priests and their students. The kahuna high priests and their students always visit the Haleakala Mountain to perform observation on the planets and stars.

There is a story behind Haleakala sunrise. According to the native Hawaiian people, the demigod Maui was summoned to see her mother one day. Her mother, Hina told Maui that her tape cloth couldn’t become dry because the sun is moving at a fast pace. Maui wanted to make his mother happy so he decided to make the sun move slower. To do this, Maui climbs up to the mountain summit to wait for the sun to come out. When the sun appears above the horizon, Maui used his lasso to capture it. When Maui lassoed the sun, the sun begged him to let it go. Maui agreed to let go of the sun provided that it moves across the sky at a slower pace so that there will be enough heat for her mother’s tapa cloth to dry.

To make sure you don’t miss the sunrise, you must get up at 3 a.m. The Maui Visitors Bureau offers visitors the chance to take a trip to the Haleakala Mountain to watch the sunrise. A bus will fetch the tourists to the mountain at 3 a.m. It can be quite cold since the summit of the Haleakala Mountain is about 9,740 feet above the sea level. You should wear more clothes so that you will feel warm during the journey to the mountain. Once you reach the mountain, the temperature will become hotter. If you want to take picture of the beautiful Haleakala sunset, you can bring camera. Most people will bring camera with flash feature. You should turn off the flash when taking picture of the Haleakala sunrise. The flash will cause distraction to other visitors so it is best that you use a camera without the flash feature.

Before the sunrise, you will notice a strong light appearing out of the clouds. You don’t have to participate in a tour group in order to see the sunrise. You can rent a vehicle and drive up to the summit of the Haleakala Mountain yourself. However, it is recommended that you participate in a tour group. If you participate in a tour group, a professional driver will drive you up to the mountain summit.
